The annual Wappenschaw in aid of the Profoundly Handicapped, Enable, was played at the club on Thursday 9th August at 7.00pm.President Walter Jamieson welcomed Kathleen Sloss and Jamie Simpson from Enable as well as Janice McHale and Lisa committee members of the local branch. 5 Rinks of players took to the greens to play 13 ends, and of course the competition wasvery keen, especially from the Gents, who were anxious to retain the trophy they won last year. The Gents were clearly up for the challenge and in the end, much to the dismay of the Ladies who were trying hard to overturn last years defeat , were the victors again by a comfortable margin of 85 shots to 59 shots. After the game the players and guests enjoyed a buffet supper provided by the Ladies. President Walter then presented Janice with a cheque for £220.00 for Enable, an increase on last year to a very worth cause. Janice McHale the President and members for their generous donation which they would use very wisely, and went on to say this yearEnable was 50 years old and she hoped the club would continue to support them in the future.

Twenty Rinks of Lady and Gents bowlers from the within the Gareloch area, and out with the area including Kippen and Glasgow, gathered at Helensburgh Bowling Club to play in the popular Open Mixed Rink Competition on Sunday 1st August commencing at 10.00am, the weather was again perfect for bowling and the players responded accordingly, The competition is very generously sponsored by, Golden Charter Funeral Plans and James Auld Funeral Directors, who were represented at the competition by Mr James Auld. In the first Semi-final the four skipped by Paul Birss (Barremman) took the early honours to lead by 3 shots to nil at the half way stage, however the Lenny Prow(Rhu) skipped rink hit back to score a one followed by a killer four shots to win the game by 5m shots to 4. In the other Semi – final the rink skipped by Robin Cavana ( Helensburgh ) also took the early honours to lead by 2 shots to nil after 1 end and scored again in the 3rd end to lead by 3 shots to 1. The Willie Kennon (Helensburgh) rink then stormed into the game to score 8 shots in the last three ends to win convincingly by 9 shots to 3 to send them into the Final against the Lenny Prow rink The Final produced the best and closest game in the competition, their was never very much between the teams over the early stages but the Willie Kennon rink gradually edged away to lead by the small margin of 4 shots to 2 going into the last end, and then Lenny Prow rink, came late as they did in the Semi Final to strike the sucker blow, and score 3 shots, after a measure to deservedly win the trophy for the first time with this formation After the final club President Walter Jamieson thanked James Auld Funeral Directors and Golden Charter for again sponsoring the event, the caterers for providing the excellent meals and the organiser for his work. James Auld congratulated the players on an excellent day of bowling and presented prizes to the section runners up, the section winners and runners up and also presented the trophy and prizes to the winning rink which completed an excellent day which was enjoyed by all the players who took part, and the spectators.

The annual game between Past President’s/Directors and Members for the John Malcolm Memorial trophy took place at the club on Thursday 15th July 2010 at 7.00pm. An excellent number of players, 3 Rinks and 2 triples, played in the game, where the members tried their very best to get the better of the “ White Collar Brigade” of the club over 13 ends. Although played in good humour both sides are always anxious to win the trophy, the members, who last won the trophy in 2001, were particularly keen to win this year. The members will have to wait another year to break their losing run as the Past Presidents Directors led by the club President Walter Jamieson were the victors by the narrow margin of 69 shots to 58. The highest up rink, in the Past Presidents/Directors team were, Annette Garrick, Cathy Crossan, John Stead and Hugh Murray (Skip) 12 shots up. The best rink in the members team were Jill Dacombe, Cassandra McKerron, Martin Air and Stephen Hepton (Skip) who 11 shots up After the game, the President Walter Jamieson presented the prizes to the winning rink and Allan Howie presented the John Malcom Trophy to the President. All the players then enjoyed a buffet supper prepared by the ladies committee. President Walter Jamieson thanked the match committee and the ladies for organising what was a very enjoyable and successful evening.

Twelve heroic members braved the horrendous weather on Wednesday 14th July for the clubs annual Cancer Research Wappenschaw’s, for a worthy cause indeed. The Ladies Wappenschaw in the afternoon was cancelled due to weather conditions, however the mixed wappenschaw was played as usual in the evening when President Walter Jamieson welcomed members of the club to the annual event, the men, as well as the ladies joined in the “Pink Dress Format”, and some even suited it. The players took to the greens and played 9 ends even although the rain was very heavy and incessant. The winning triple were George Tait, Claire Macindoe and Iain Macleod(Skip) who were presented with their Prizes by The President Walter Jamieson All the players, despite being soaked through, enjoyed an excellent fun night of bowls, which contributes to a very worth and deserving cause. The club president, Walter welcomed Mrs Sharon A. Sheridan, the Area Volunteer Manager from Cancer Research UK and presented her with a cheque for £240, which included the proceeds from the Cancer Research Bottle donations from members and visitors, at both Wappensachaw’s. Sharon thanked the members for their generous donation saying that the Cancer Research UK rely solely on donations like this to fund their vital research. The President thanked Sharon for taking the time to travel from Falkirk in such conditions and the members for their generosity and attendance.
