“Oh What a FRIGHT the Men Got”
The one competition in Helensburgh Bowling Clubs annual fixture list, which pitches the ladies against the gents on an equal “footing” was played on Saturday 6th June starting at 10.00am. Entries to the competition are pairs of two ladies or two gents only, no mixed pairs allowed, and no quarter is asked for, or indeed given, on either side.Group_Web
The competition was played on a round robin basis, with each team playing each other over 10 ends. The competition was played in 2 sections and when the section games were completed Jill Dacombe and Marge Mackenzie qualified from Section 1 with 8 points from the maximum 10 their nearest rivals having 6 points. In Section 2 only 2 points separated all the team and 2 teams, Iain Macleod and Allan Howie, and Gordon Stephen finished on 6 points. When shot difference was taken into account Gordon and Don emerged as the qualifiers by the margin of only 2 shots.

Runners_Up_WebIn the final Gordon and Don forged ahead to lead by 4 shots to nil Winners_Webbefore Jill and Marge hit them hard by scoring 5 shots in two ends to lead by 5 shots to 4. the advantage then went to both teams for the next 5 ends and going into the last end Jill and Marge held a 1 shot advantage. The gents were in danger at this point however they rallied to score a 3 to win the trophy by 9 shots to 7, a huge sigh of relieve was clearly visible from them men, the ladies nearly pulled it off.

 
DBA Rutherford Trophy 2010
President Walter Jamieson welcomed the President Stewart Shields from the Dumbartonshire Bowling Association to the club on Sunday 30th May for the annual Bill Rutherford Trophy game where the under 25 players from the East of the County play the under 25 players from the west of the County.
Rutherford_Trophy_WebThe players were competing for the Trophy presented by the family of the late Bill Rutherford in his memory. Bill was a past President of the Association and a very active and prominent and very popular member of Barremman BC
The annual game is always played with great enthusiasm and a great deal of competition between the players, many of who are members of the full Dumbartonshire squad and the County Under 25 squad who have qualified for the later stages of the Scottish Junior championship.
As usual the contest was very keen throughout the 17 ends with both teams having their share of success, in the end the west team just edged the game by 11 shots to win the contest. The full results were as follows:

The Winners of the Trophy, the highest up four , were Tom Allan, David Whitfield, Paul Kane Jnr and K Anderson ( Skip) who were 22 shots up.
After the game President Stewart Shields presented the winners with their medals and the players enjoyed a meal prepared by the ladies of the club.

 
Lions Club Charity Wappenschaw 2010

The members of Helensburgh Bowling Club turned out on Wednesday 19th May to support the Annual Charity Wappenschaw, in aid of Helensburgh Lions Club, one of the many Charities the club supports every year.
The members played the game over 13 ends, with all the games being very close at the completion of the game. One triple finished just a little in front of the others with plus 10 shots, this rink consisted of Walter Jamieson (President) Iain Macleod and Stewart Cattanach (Skip.)
After the game the Lady Captain Annette Garrick welcomed the Lions Club President, Geoff Brewster who then presented the Prizes to the winning Rink. The Lady Captain Annette then Presentation_webpresented a cheque for £100, the proceeds of the donations received, to Geoff the Lions President. Geoff in responding thanked the club for their generous donation and continued support over the years, he went on to say that these donations enable the Lions to support
their various activities, their current project is creating a Sensor Garden in “ Parklands” which will complete in the next few month. The cash also supports the Community bus which is used by many clubs in the town, as well as providing a Christmas Party for the elderly in the town.

DBA Centenary Game v District 1 & 2

President Walter Jamieson welcomed the President Stewart Shields from the Dumbartonshire Bowling Association to the club on Sunday 16th May for a special game as part of the Dumbarton Bowling Association special celebrations in this their Centenary year. President Walter handed over the greens to President Stewart of the DBA who said he was delighted to be in Helensburgh for the first local, game of their Centenary year.
The game was played with the Dumbartonshire Association against the Presidents, and representatives of the 18 clubs which form District 1 and district 2 of the Association.
The game was played with 6 triples from the DBA playing against the District 1 & 2 Clubs which resulted in the District 1 & 2 clubs being the victors by 88 shots to 75.
After the game the company enjoyed a meal prepared by the ladies of the club after which President Stewart intimated all players from the District 1 & 2 clubs had a presentation box of Centenary gifts from the DBA at their table places. He then made a presentation to the club President Walter Jamieson on behalf of the DBA.
President Walter in return made a presentation to Stewart on behalf of Helensburgh BC. Frank McCarry on behalf of Renton BC made a presentation to President Stewart of the DBA on behalf of the President and members of the Renton BC. Bothe Presidents then brought the proceedings to a close by thanking the ladies for the catering and wishing all a safe journey home.
