The annual GBA 3-2-1 Competition was played at Helensburgh BC on Saturday 4th September 2010 commencing at 10.00am. A unique and different competition in which the clubs enter a team of six players, making up a singles, pairs and triples, the different categories from each club then play each other once, with the winner being the club who finishes with the highest combined total from all the categories at the completion of the games. As the competition progressed the points total was very close between, Helensburgh on 15 points, Garelochhead on 11 points and Colgrain on 10 points at the lunch interval. After lunch the contest remained tight and going into the last game the points stood at Helensburgh on 21, Garelochhead on 17 and Colgrain on 14 and it was all to play for. The tension did not end their as with only Iain Macleod to finish his singles game, against Rory Smith of Rhu, Helensburgh and Garelochhead were level on points. Iain was one shot up and lying one in the last end of his game with Rory who the played a bowl which trailed the jack to leave him lying 2 shots to win the game. Iain, as success this year can justify had one bowl left and he played a blinder, which also trailed the jack, this time into the ditch and lie to win the game by two shots. This score meant that Helensburgh had retained the trophy this year by a margin of just two points from a Garelochhead.
The winning Helensburgh Team were Iain Macleod Singles, George Sneddon & Keith Tait( Skip) in the Pairs and Iain Fraser, Don Lilley and Robin Cavana ( Skip) in the Triples. After the game the GBA President Jim McBride presented the Winners and Runners up with their Prizes and Trophy |
The section games of Mixed Two Bowl Pairs competition for the Brown McMahon trophy were played on Tuesday 31st August, and Thursday and Friday 2nd & 3rd September. When the section games, played over 10 ends, were completed on the first session on Friday the Blue section had a clear winner, the pair of Jill Dacombe and Stephen Hepton with 6 points, In the Black Section two pairs finished on 6 points, when shots difference was taken into account Pat Donald and Iain Macleod just managed to qualify by virtue of being 1 shot ahead. The Red Section winners were Rhona Jay and Don Lilley, again shot difference decided the winner however the best runner up also qualified from this section, and they were Mary Leech and Campbell Jardine. In the Semi Finals Mary Leech & Campbell Jardine face Jill Dacombe & Stephen Hepton, Mary and Campbell took the early lead and held on, in a very tight game to qualify for the final winning by 10 shots to 8. In the other Semi Final Pat Donald and Iain Macleod were paired with Rhona Jay and Don Lilley, this game was much tighter than the first with never more than 1 shot separating the teams. In the end Pat and Iain triumphed winning by 8 shots to 7 to go into the final. In the Final, also played on Friday, Mary Leech and Campbell Jardine had the better start before Pat Donald and Iain Macleod levelled the game at 5 shots all at the sixth end and the went into a8 shots to 5 lead going into the last end. There was still fight in Mary and Campbell and at one point they were holding the three shots required to force the game into an extra end, however Iain Macleod cut the three shots to one and along with Pat he added to his ever growing list of successes this year by winning yet another trophy. |

The annual mixed Triples event sponsored by Mrs Christine and Don Lilley took place at the club on Sunday 29th August commencing at 1.00pm. The teams of triples were again divided into two sections and played games against each other over 6 ends. When the section games were complete the winners of the red section, who dropped only one point from their games, were Marge Mac Kenzie, Claire Macindoe and Duncan Mc Killop (Skip), who finished one point ahead of the triple skipped by Norman McLean. The blue section was astonishing in that all the teams were beating one another to the extent that the Triple of Rhona Jay, Liz Smith and Allan Howie qualified for the final with only four points, one ahead of other triples in the section. The final started very well indeed for the Duncan McKillop skipped triple who scored 3 shots at the first end to give them the advantage. Try as they may the Allan Howie skipped triple, who were playing good bowls, could not match the winning triple of Marge, Claire and Duncan the skip, who won the trophy for 2010 comfortably.
